About the event

In 2006, Tarana Burke began using the phrase MeToo to help women talk about their experiences of abuse, and the phrase exploded as a hashtag in 2017 across Twitter, Facebook, and other social media platforms. The #ChurchToo hashtag quickly followed, with women finding the courage to talk about experiences of sexual abuse and coverups in the church.

In some circles, these events came and went, and the topic did as well. Yet, other circles have continued to work towards changing church cultures to better empower women.

One element of this change should come in our preaching and interpretation. This Zoom presentation will suggest refocusing our lens on several passages from the Old and New Testaments that might be (but are not always) preached in ways that promote equal value and respect for women. Issues of God language and theologies of forgiveness will be mentioned along the way. Q&A to follow.
